Severe thunderstorm hit Pécel on 10th of june, 2009.

The day seemed to be an average dry day but in the evening, the events changed.

At around 18:00 a supercell was coming accross South Budapest which was visible from the balcony of our house:

On the radar (see at Budapest):

With the time it was coming nearer:

But it died as it arrived:

Lightning from the cloud:

However the events didn’t finish yet. One of the members of www.metnet.hu ‘thunderstorm hunter’ forum signed suddenly around 6 octa clouds appeared around him and the radar image also showed the clouds emerged from the ‘nothing’:

I set up the tripod and the camera immediately. And rushed to the balcony. Saw nothing. I thought the cloud are going to disappear. After 15 minutes I looked back the ‘thunderstorm hunter’ forum at www.metnet.hu and they said it started to produce lightning bolts. I ran back to the balcony and saw the flashes. The lightning bolts came nearer and nearer, the thunder became louder and louder.

Catched one bolt:

stormOnly managed to catch this one. It was coming fastly and started to rain. I left my tripod in the rain with the camera covered in the hope if it catch some close lightning striking in the town. But it didn’t. The rain stopped for a while and started again with wind gusts. I grab the camera and pulled inside. My pyjama got wet and the wter was pouring from the tripod. The rain was loud and maybe there was small hail with it.

Fortunately the camera lens got only very few raindrops and I blew it away from it and started to photograph lightning to the other direction. As I opened the window the lightinng struck very close (less than a half mile away!). It was so loud that made me a headache! I started to make photos and catched these things:
